A CLOSE LOOK
"The loon is a paragon of beauty. Alert, supple, vigorous, one knows
himself to be in the presence of the master wild thing when he
comes upon a loon on guard in his native element."
-W. L. Dawson, 1923
In appearance, voice, behavior and physiology, the common loon is
a fascinating bird. It is distinctive from its dagger-like beak right
down to its feetmthey are enormous and seriously under-studied. In
thousands of pages of research papers on loons, there are only casual
references to the feet, usually noting simply that the feet are webbed
and large. Large doesn't do justice to the loon's primary means of
aquatic locomotion.
Loon devotees might want to take matters into their own hands
and measure the feet of a few mounted specimens. If they did, they
would find the average loon foot to be about five inches long by
three inches wide. If real loon fanatics travelled to Concord, New
Hampshire and visited the offices of the New Hampshire Audubon
Society, they would be rewarded. A monster loon is on display there
with feet nearly six inches long and a full four inches wide. (Pull out
a ruler and take a careful look at four inches.) The loon is an avian
bigfoot; a proportionate human shoe size would be about 45 triple R.
